How to choose a lawn and landscape pro
Insist on proof of insurance
Ask every company for a current certificate of liability insurance, and for tree work, proof of workers' compensation too. Tree removal is dangerous work, and an uninsured crew can leave you exposed if someone is hurt or your home is damaged. Call the insurer named on the certificate if you want to confirm the policy is active.
Check state licenses where required
Many states require a license to apply fertilizer, weed killer or pesticides for hire, and some license landscape or fence contractors above a certain job size. Ask which licenses they hold and look them up with your state agriculture department or contractor board. For tree work, ask whether a certified arborist will assess the tree.
Get a detailed written quote
A good quote spells out the scope of work, materials, cleanup, haul-away and when payment is due. For a fence, it should list the material, height, gates, post depth and who pulls the permit. For tree work, it should say whether stump grinding and wood removal are included.
Avoid storm chasers and big deposits
Be cautious of crews who knock on your door after a storm offering fast tree removal for cash. A reasonable deposit on a large job is normal, but paying most of the cost before work starts is a red flag. A local company with a real address is easier to reach if something goes wrong later.
Confirm property lines and utilities
Before a fence goes in or a tree comes down, make sure you know exactly where your property line is, and check any HOA rules. Call 811 a few days before any digging so underground utility lines get marked at no charge. A good fence company will ask about both before setting a single post.
What it typically costs
These are typical US price ranges, and prices in your area may be higher or lower.
Yard size, slopes, obstacles and whether edging and blowing are included change the price.
The amount of leaves and debris and how much needs hauling away drive the cost.
Height, how close the tree is to buildings or power lines, and stump grinding all add to the price.
Wood type, fence height, gates and rocky or sloped ground move the price.
Common questions
How often should my lawn be mowed?
During the peak growing season, most lawns need mowing about once a week. A common guideline is to never cut off more than a third of the grass blade at one time, which helps keep the lawn healthy. In cooler months or dry spells, every two weeks is often enough.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in your area?
It depends on local rules, so check with the city or county before any tree comes down in your area. Many cities require a permit for large trees, certain protected species or trees near the street, and some fine owners who remove one without approval. A local tree service should know the rules and may be able to handle the permit for you.
Do I need a permit to build a fence?
Often yes, so check with your local building or zoning office before you start. Many areas limit fence height, especially in front yards, and require fences to sit a set distance from sidewalks or property lines. If you have an HOA, get its approval in writing too.
When is the best time to trim trees?
For most trees, late winter while they are dormant is the best time for routine pruning. The tree handles cuts well then, and with the leaves gone the branch structure is easy to see. Dead, broken or hanging limbs that could fall should be dealt with right away, whatever the season.
Does a lawn care company need a license?
It depends on your state and the service. Basic mowing often needs little more than a local business license, but applying fertilizer, weed control or pesticides for hire generally requires a state applicator license. You can look up an applicator license through your state agriculture department.
What is the difference between a landscaper and a lawn care company?
A lawn care company focuses on keeping grass healthy, usually through mowing, fertilizing, weed control and aeration. A landscaper designs and builds outdoor spaces, such as planting beds, patios, walkways and drainage. Many companies offer both, so check each listing for the services you need.
